Researching into Similar Products

I have started to look at different music videos that are quite similar to my music video ideas. While watching some music channels, I have come across a music video that was similar to the concept of my ideas. The song is called 'With Ur Love' by the artist Cher Lloyd.

This is the official music video for Cher Lloyd, 'With Ur Love':

This music video is similar to my ideas of my music video as the colour scheme is bright and vivid which is what I want in my video. The colour scheme helps emphasize the care free nature and happiness of both songs and help portray that feeling and atmosphere to the audience. Also this video is similar to my music video ideas as for most parts of the song it shows the artist walking down the street which is what I am doing for my music video. With the artists walking down the street, it shows a cheerful and light-hearted feeling reflecting the untroubled and relaxing mood. Also near the end of the music video, it shows the artist walking with two other characters and also a crowd which is quite similar to mine as I am also having my main character walking with two others at the end but not with a crowd. It almost seems as a closing to the music video as the main character is not on her own but with support from others beside her. With this video of Cher Lloyd,'With Ur Love', the video starts and ends in the same place. This is the biggest similarity between mine and Cher Lloyd's music video as both start and end of my music video is in the same place and position, both parts showing my main character sitting down in spotlight.

I have also found another music video that is similar to my music video ideas and the song is called 'Pack Up' by the artist Eliza Doolittle.

This is the official music video for Eliza Doolittle, 'Pack Up':

The reasons why this music video is similar to my ideas for my music video as the song and artist is the same genre as Lenka which is folk. The genre of folk shows in Eliza Doolittle's music video as it is simple and portrays that care free nature of the folk genre. This is what I want to portray in my music video too. Also that the artist is the one that is the most important and focussed which would also be shown in my video as majority of my music video is of the artist on her own so that she would be more of the focus point in my video. The untroubled and care free atmosphere is emphasized when the artist, Eliza Doolittle is dancing and skipping in the music video. For my video, I might also have my characters skip along the street to portray that happy and cheerful mood of the song which would also reflect that care free nature of the folk genre. Also the image of  Eliza Doolittle is quite quirky which is similar to Lenka's image as she also has that quirky and edgy look.

Researching into similar music videos helps see the similarities between my music video ideas to the professional made music videos. This would help make my music video more professional as by looking at other music videos, I would be able to see the different shots that are used to make that video and could inspire me to use that shot in mine. However, it would also show me how unique and different my ideas are, making my music video more original and inspired and also interesting.

Advanced Portfolio: Peer Assessment

Another student in my class has looked through my blog thoroughly and has rated different areas of my blog such as my time management, research and planning evidence. He has rated within the categories of minimal, basic, proficient or excellent. Within the assessment, I have also had some suggestions and improvements written down which can help me improve my blog. This would help me move it to an excellent blog as the student assessing my blog has rated majority of the areas as being basic and proficient. I then made my own targets on how to improve my blog from the suggestions made by the student.

Here is the assessment made by the student :

Reviewing my Blog Posts

I looked through all my blog posts and also the title of each posts to check that all the blog titles are clearly named and made sense to the person who was looking at my blog. I needed to title my blog posts clearly so that if someone was just looking through my posts, it would make sense to them and was easily understood of what the post was about. To do this, I wrote down all the titles of each blog posts and also the date that I posted it. With all the blog post titles writtten down, it made it easier to see the post titles that were unclear. I found some that were not clear enough so I went through my blog posts and re-titled all those that did not make sense and made them clearer. This made my blog more easier to look through as each posts are now clear and easily understood.

Here is the all the written blog post titles and dates:

Ancillary Task: Music Magazine Advertisements

As an introduction to music magazines, we had a brief history of music magazines from 1950s, when music magazine were published to present days. To start preparing for our music magazine advertisement, we started looking at different music magazines to see the different features and different genres of magazines.

For our ancilliary task, we were given different music magazines where we had to find out the institution and the target audience of the music magazine given by just looking at the front cover. We then did a textual analysis of the front cover, analysing the colours and font used and features on the cover but also talking about the audience of the magazine and how the front cover would appeal to them. Also the artists of the front cover would determine the genre of the music magazine.

Me and my partner, Scarlett got the Q magazine with the front cover of the band, The Killers. We determined the target audience of the magazine is for the youths as the colours were bright and vivid with the use of pink and green for the font of the writing. However, it still had the red and black so people would recognise it to be the Q magazine and the genre of rock. After analysing the front cover of the magazine, we produced a powerpoint on the institution and the analysis of the front cover of the magazine.

This is the front cover of Q magazine of the band The Killers:

I have now started to look at the magazine which my artist, Lenka would feature in and would be appropriate for her advertisement to be in. The genre of my artist is pop, folk-pop so I have looked at many music magazines that are suitable for my artist. I have looked at different music magazines that Lenka can feature in that would appeal to females and the target audience of youths and also ages over 18 .

To get me started in researching different music magazines, I decided to look at a variety of pop music magazines as their are most targeted at females which could feature Lenka's advertisement in.

These are the pop music magazines that I have looked at:

Blender magazine
http://www.blender.com/

Billboard magazine
http://www.billboard.com/#/

After looking at these pop music magazines, I thought that it did not suit my artist Lenka as the looks on the front cover of these magazines are over the top where as Lenka is trying to potray a more quirky and natural look and a more simplistic feel to her image. These magazines are mostly about trying to sell the artist based on their image and the front cover shows the exaggeration due to the brightness of the colours used to try and get the artist's image appealed to the readers. However, even though my artist Lenka is more about are quirky image, it is not as exaggerated as the artists in the pop genre.

From this, I decided to look into more music magazines that are more suitable for my artist and her image and genre of folk-pop. I then found some more magazines that have a more natural and simplistic feel to it and that Lenka could feature in as the colours of the front cover of these magazines are more natural and lighter than the pop music magazines and would suit my artist's image. As Lenka is in the folk-pop genre this means the magazine must seem trendy and cultured due to her genre and would portray her quirky but natural image. However, the magazine should not seem as exaggerated as the pop genre but gives the readers a sense of the artist from looking at her image.

'In Tune' magazine
I have found a magazine called 'In Tune' that Lenka could feature in as the look of the cover of the magazine is similiar to Lenka's genre and image. I feel as though the magazine is more cultured like Lenka's genre of flok-pop and also it feels more natural and simple reflecting Lenka's image. The font on the front cover is not too fancy like in most pop music magazines as it it trying to portay that natural feel of the magazine. Also the simple colours makes the whole magazine more cultured and make the readers feel that the magazine is not too exaggaerated and is more about the artist's music. I also feel that Lenka could feature in this magazine as she is trying portray her image more and would want to show her quirky and edgy look and with this magazine, it would help her create that natural and edgy feel about Lenka due to the simplicity and also the natural colours used by the magazine.

In Tune Monthly is a magazine that seeks to enrich the band, orchestra, choral and general music curriculum. It is written for middle and high school music students which are typically purchased by music educators. It is also sold in some musical instrument and equipment stores, and can be purchased online.

In Tune was founded in 2003 by veteran Billboard, Forbes and Business Week publishing executive Irwin Kornfeld, former Musician, EQ and Gig magazines publisher Angelo Biasi, and GRAMMY-winning music producer Will Edwards.

'Crossroad' magazine

I have also found a music magazine, 'Crossroad' with the front cover of my artist Lenka. From looking at this front cover of the magazine, Crossroad, I feel as though the look is quite trendy and is quite similar to the 'In Tune' magazine as the look of this magazine is quite cultured and the image of Lenka's genre of folk-pop fits with the look of this magazine. The colours are quite subtle and not too bright which would suit the genre of folk-pop and also the font is simple and not too fancy as this would appeal to teenagers and ages just over 18.
I feel that this magazine would work as Lenka has already feature in the magazine so her image and her genre of folk-pop would fit. The faded subtle pink on the front cover with Lenka, shows the artist as being quite girly but the pink is not too bright as Lenka would want to keep that natural and simple look and feel about her. Her edginess is shown by her pose of her face and the style of her hair as it is a strong look by the piercing of her eyes. The font of the magazine is not too stylish or fancy and the colour of the blue gives that edge as it contrasts to the pink in the background.

'R2' magazine

After looking at my last magazine, 'Crossroad', I have found another magazine that is similar to the trendy and cultured look of the 'Crossroad' magazine. This magazine that I have found is called 'R2' magazine, I feel as though Lenka's advertisment would feature in this magazine as the look is not over the top and the colours are simple and not too bright. This shows the simplicity feel of the magazine which would suit Lenka but also the natural colours give the magazine a more cultured feel to it which would be suitable for Lenka's genre of folk-pop. Lenka would also be perfect featuring in this magazine as this magazine is all about the genres of folk, rock, blues and more of the cultured genres.

R2 is a music magazine published bi-monthly in the United Kingdom. It was launched in 1988 as Rock'n'Reel, changing its name to R2 in early 2009. The original Rock’n’Reel was a pocket-sized fanzine of modest ambitions. Since its relaunch in 2007 as an A4 format, full-colour glossy magazine, it has greatly extended its scope and readership. R2’s coverage of the music scene now encompasses both classic and contemporary rock plus established and emerging talents from the worlds of roots, blues, folk, Americana, singer-songwriter and world music.
R2 claims that its uniqueness lies in truly reflecting the enthusiasms of its writers and readers on the page.
A typical issue contains new CD and DVD release details, artist updates and festival news, alongside an extensive review section, articles and interviews.

After researching the different music magazines, I have decided to go for the 'R2' magazine as the magazine to have the advertisement of Lenka featuring in. I feel that this magazine is more suited for Lenka as the different aspects of the magazine such as the colours are quite simple but also catches that edginess of the magazine. This helps to portray Lenka as it would enhance her image and emphasize her character of being edgy and quirky. I also chose this magazine as it is more based and focussed on the cultured genres as it looks at the folk, rock and blues which is ideal for Lenka and her genre folk-pop. This means that the readers of the magazine would be more interested in these types of artists and so would be interested in Lenka and would want to find out more about her.

To research more into depths in 'R2', I have the September/October 2011 issue of the magazine which would help me see how the magazines is like and what it consists. By having a copy of the magazine, it gives me a feel of what is expected and to see the different things that are included in the magazine. It would also help me see the variety of music advertisements from different artists that are featured in the magazine and how their advertisments are different by the look and colours they have included in the advert. When it comes to creating the music advertisment for Lenka, I would be more familiar of what to include in the advert to make it ideal to feature in the magazine.

This is the 'R2' magazine that I have:

To help see the concept of the different music advertisements featuring in this magazine, I am going to choose three adverts and analyse about the look, colours and font of the advertisement. I am going to choose specifically advertisements that are similiar maybe the look of my artist Lenka or the feel of her character that are portrayed in the advert, By doing this, it would make it more easier to create my music advertisement for Lenka as I would know what to include in my advertisement to appeal to the readers and also my target audience.

Music Advertisments from 'R2' Magazine Analysis:

After analysing these music advertisement, I now know what it is ideal to inlcude in an advertsiement for it to feature in the 'R2' music magazine. From these advertisements, I could sense that it was the simplicity of the adverts that made the advertisement stand out and more appealing as it was clearer to the readers and also enhances the nature of the genre of folk. For my advertisement of Lenka, I would make it simple but quirky to portray her image and also would make the advertisment more contrasting with use of colours. This would make it stand out and more appealing to the readers and would also fit to feature in the 'R2' magazine.

Filming Schedule for my Music Video Complete

I have now created and completed my Filming Schedule for my music video so I would be more organised and know what shots to film and when. This would help me with my time-keeping and also give me more time to film some extra footage if needed. This would avoid any rush in getting my filming done and also not knowing when to do my fiming. With this schedule, I would be able to inform my cast of the dates of filming so when they are busy on that day, I would be able to re-arrange it and inform them on their next filming. Every filming would be on a weekend so it gives me more time to film and also I want to start early on the filming as it gets really dark and my music video would need a lot of light as it is in the daytime. I have also noted on the filming schedule that filming in the Drama Hall could be done any day after school with my main character as it would be free and also would not affect what time of day it is as it is inside with the spotlight providing the lighting. For each of the filming sessions, it would last about 3 hours each, giving me enough time to get extra footage and more filming done. All of the dates on the filming schedule would go to plan depending if my cast is free or not.

Here is the Filming Schedule that I have created:

Here is my shot list that I have created:

Creating a Shot List and Filming Schedule

I have now started my shot list and will be completing it soon as it would help me in my filming so I would know what shots to include in my music video and would know what to film. This would make me more organized as I would know what shots to film and would not get stuck. The shot list also gives me a rough guide of how many shots would be in my music video, however the list might change as I might add some more shots during the production of my music video.

I am also going to create a filming schedule so I would be more organized and would be good with my timing. The filming schedule would help me with my deadlines of my filming so I would be ready to edit with all my footage adn extra filming that I would be doing too. However, the schedule might change due to if my cast would not be able to make it to the filming and is unavailable, then I would need to re-arrange the dates. If I keep to the schedule, I would be able finish all my filming in time and would not need to rush.
