Treatment for Lenka- The Show

Artist’s Name: Lenka

Song Title: The Show
Duration: 3:55
Director: Leanne Mok
Record Label: Epic Records

Overview
I have thought of a range of different ideas which I wish to include in my music video that would help keep my audience interested and visually excited. To create my effective music video for this song, I am planning to have some special effects such as glows and colour effects to emphasize and reinforce the happiness of the song into my video. There would be elements of the video in which I would have different lighting and tones to keep the video upbeat and more visually interesting and enjoyable to watch. Majority of the music video would be taken up by the artist’s performance of lip syncing as well as the visuals. The lyrics would relate to the visuals showing a narrative illustration of the song which also the video would cut to the beat.

Style
The genre of the artist is folk-pop, therefore the style and wardrobe of the artist is more care-free and relaxed which reflects the image of the artist and also the feel of the song. The clothing of the artist would be casual and not too over the top, more simplicity of wearing a really pretty dress to give that young feel and cheerful mood of the song. I want the artist to wear a dress as there are references in the lyrics of being a little girl and the first thought of a little girl’s clothing and style is a dress. I also want the hair and makeup to be minimum to reflect on the care free nature of the artist but also the reminding of the image of a naive and little girl.
As the feel to the song is quite upbeat and happy, I am planning to have the colour scheme of the music video in bright colours to reinforce the brightness and happiness of the song. This would make the music video more positively seen and visually enjoyable as it would be colourful and vibrant. I am planning to add glow effects to some elements of the music video to enhance more of the mood of the song but also the artist's image. This would get the audience more involved and engaged with the music video as they would feel the sense of the song of being happy and cheerful due to the colour scheme.
There will be a range of different camera shots and movement to cover the variety in my music video to keep my video visually interesting and enjoyable. I am planning to use close ups on the artist to show her lip syncing but mainly focussing on her emotions to convey to the audience that positive feel of the song. I am also planning to use many camera movements, especially tracking shots to show the artist’s journey and also to make the audience feel as though the artist is taken them on the journey too. When editing the footage together, I would be using special effects to help create that smooth and flowing editing.

Concept
My music video would fit into the Goodwin’s classification of illustration as I plan to have a structured narrative where the visuals would match the lyrics in the song and having the artist taking the audience almost on a journey.
As the introduction to my music video, I plan to have a close up of a girl lip syncing the first line in a dark room with the spotlight on her. This would make the audience more focussed on the artist and her surroundings which nicely helps to surprise them as I am thinking of making the frame zoom out and having the girl finding herself in another location, maybe in the back of a car stuck between two people, which match the lyrics when she finishes lip syncing the line ‘…caught in the middle.’ For the rest of the verse, I am planning to have her opening doors that lead to different locations and getting lost and confused which relates to the lyrics. This would keep the audience interested as they would not know of what to come next and having different camera shots and movements would make it more visually exciting. I am thinking of having point of view shots and tracking shots of the girl to show her confusion and emotions.
For the next verse, I am planning to have the girl strolling down the street and having fun and skipping along. With this situation, I am planning to put the glow effects to show her state of mind of being happy and care-free. However when she starts spinning round, she turns round and finds herself maybe in the middle of a field. I would then have a close up of her face showing her confusion and then maybe zooming out to show her isolation.
This then nicely introduces my chorus as I might repeat the shots originally of when she was in the car seat stuck in between two people as it makes the shots before seem as though she was day dreaming enhanced by the glow effects. She then opens the door and gets out the car and the audience would feel as though they are following her on her journey of the day, walking down streets and through the park.
This then follows onto the next verse where she is skipping though the park and when she lip syncs the line ‘The sun is hot in the sky…’, I would then have are looking up to the sun where the camera would follow her movement. However when she finishes the line ‘… just like a giant spotlight’ I would then have a shot of a spotlight where the audience would see her in the dark room again. For the next line, it would then switch back to her where she is skipping along in the park where she would be followed by other people when she lip syncs ‘The people follow the signs and synchronize in time.’ When the verse finishes with the line, ‘It's a joke nobody knows they've got a ticket to the show’, I would have the camera fixed and then her and the other people skipping towards it and passing the camera so the audience would see them skipping out of the shots.
For the last verse of when the lyrics repeat ‘I want my money back I want my money back I want my money back just enjoy the show’ I would have her coming through the red curtains to reflect the song title, The Show. After coming through the red curtains, I would have her leaving and then a close up of her smiling then fading out as the finish of the music video.

Summary
I believe from these ideas I have produced, I can create a successful and effective music video for the song, The Show by Lenka. It would keep my audience interested as they would enjoy the narrative and having the lyrics matching the visuals. This would help them follow the lyrics as from these ideas it feels as though it would be a quirky and creative music video which reflects the artist, Lenka’s image. My music video would help promote the artist’s images as it would be visually bright and enjoyable which would emphasize the mood of happiness, reflecting the artist’s personality and image of being happy and care free. These ideas for my music video would suit the song well as it reflects the mood of the song and shows the artist in a good image to help promote the song and also the artist.
